Impact of Blockage of Suez Canal

Updated: Jul 21, 2021

Suez Canal was opened in the year 1869 which gave an enourmous boost to the world trade. It connects the Red Sea to Mediterranean Sea making trade possible for many countries at less cost and time.

Today nearly 52 cargo ships passes every day from this canal contributing to 12% of the total world trade i.e.$ 9 billion per day.

In march 2021 Suez Canal was blocked by a massive 400m cargo ship. This was due to the dusty whether and dust storms which made the ship move in one direction blocking the Suez Canal and causing a heavy traffic jam and impacting the world trade.Nearly after 6 days the ship was freed. Due to delay in trade, the prices of goods orderd were risen specially the crude oil.
